Stegosaurus: Thagomizer
Featured in the ORIGIN OF GIANTS Exhibit
Late Jurassic Period, approx. 155-150 million years ago
1:2 Scale Thagomizer Replica
SPECIMEN PROFILE
The thagomizers of Stegosaurus were four elongated, pointed dermal spikes arranged in two pairs at the end of the tail. Unlike the vertebrae beneath them, these structures developed within the skin as modified osteoderms, forming a specialized defensive weapon distinct from the animal’s large dorsal plates.
Positioned at the tail’s most effective striking point, the thagomizers could be swung with the powerful musculature of the tail. Their narrow, sharply pointed form concentrated force into a small area, making them particularly effective against would-be attackers and giving Stegosaurus one of the most recognizable defensive adaptations in the fossil record.
COLLECTOR & CURATOR NOTE
A specialized osteoderm transformed into a formidable weapon: one of four pointed thagomizers that armed the tail of Stegosaurus.
