SPECIMEN PROFILE

Stegosaurus is renowned for the two staggered rows of large dorsal plates that extended from its neck to the tip of its tail. These structures were osteoderms: bony elements that developed within the skin rather than forming as part of the underlying skeleton. Their thin, highly vascularized construction was very different from the thick, compact armor seen in many other armored dinosaurs.

The plates varied considerably in shape and size along the body, with smaller elements near the neck and tail and much larger plates across the trunk. Their exact function remains debated, but their extensive blood supply suggests they may have played a role in heat exchange, while their prominent size and arrangement almost certainly made them important visual signals for display or recognition.
