Spinosaurus: Spine
Featured in the ORIGIN OF GIANTS Exhibit
Late Cretaceous Period, approx. 99-93 million years ago
1:5 Scale Vertebrae Spine Replica
SPECIMEN PROFILE
Spinosaurus possessed some of the most extraordinary neural spines known among theropod dinosaurs. Extending dramatically from the vertebrae along the back, these elongated bones supported a tall dorsal structure commonly referred to as its sail. The spines were greatly expanded but remained relatively slender, creating a broad surface above the vertebral column without forming a solid bony plate.
The sail's exact function remains debated, with proposed roles including visual display, species recognition, and thermoregulation. Its enormous size nevertheless demonstrates how extensively the vertebrae of Spinosaurus were modified, transforming an ordinary series of spinal projections into one of the most distinctive structures in dinosaur anatomy.
COLLECTOR & CURATOR NOTE
An extraordinary example of spinal specialization, the elongated neural spine helped support the towering dorsal sail of Spinosaurus.
