No. Bonefire Studios does not sell authentic fossils or casts made directly from real fossil specimens.Instead, our pieces are museum-inspired, scientifically informed recreations created from licensed digital sculptures by talented collaborative artists. Each replica is individually produced in high-quality resin before being carefully textured and hand-painted to achieve a realistic fossil-like appearance.Our goal is to celebrate prehistoric life through detailed artistic recreations that capture the look and character of real fossils while remaining accessible to collectors, educators, and enthusiasts.

Our replicas are offered at a variety of scales, which describe the size of the model relative to the estimated size of the living animal (for example, a 1:4 scale replica is approximately one-quarter the size of its real-life counterpart). Because the dimensions of prehistoric species are based on ongoing scientific research and fossil discoveries, all listed scales should be considered approximate. To help you better visualize the size of each piece, every product listing also includes the replica's finished length, width, and height.For every species, we strive to offer at least one display-friendly size - typically up to 12 inches in length whenever practical. The available scales for each replica ultimately depend on the estimated size and proportions of the original animal. Looking for a different size? We are happy to produce most species at custom scales upon request. Larger scales may require additional production time and may not be available for every model. Yes! We welcome inquiries from museums, educational institutions, research facilities, exhibits, and other organizations seeking custom prehistoric displays or replica projects. For institutional work, we also maintain a private catalog of approximately 30 full skeletal reconstructions that are not currently listed in our public Species Catalog or available for general purchase. Resin remains dimensionally stable under normal display conditions, but like most painted artwork, we recommend avoiding prolonged direct sunlight to help preserve the finish over time.Giftshop CollectionBiodegradable PLA (Polylactic Acid) Our Giftshop Collection is produced in PLA, a plant-based plastic derived from renewable resources such as corn starch. PLA is lightweight, durable for everyday handling, and well suited for articulated and interactive designs. Because PLA can soften when exposed to excessive heat, we recommend avoiding hot environments, prolonged direct sunlight, and other heat sources.

We explored this idea extensively during our pre-launch development and tested a variety of production methods. After comparing the results, we concluded that FDM printing simply does not meet the quality standards we have established for our museum-inspired replicas.Our replicas are designed to capture the fine details, realistic textures, and museum-quality finish of prehistoric fossils. While modern FDM printers produce excellent results for many applications, they still leave visible layer lines and cannot consistently achieve the level of surface detail and realism we expect for our replica collection. Resin printing allows us to preserve those details before each piece is individually textured and hand-painted.For this reason, all of our museum replicas are produced exclusively in resin.Our FDM printers are instead dedicated to our Giftshop Collection, where their strengths are best utilized. Products such as articulated models and other interactive collectibles are specifically designed for FDM printing and are excellent applications for the material.The only exception may be certain custom large-scale commissions or projects, where the size or weight of a resin print could make FDM a more practical solution. These projects are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
