None of the replicas that Bonefire Studios produces are (in whole or part) authentic, real fossils nor are they casts of real fossils - they are artistic, but scientifically-informed, recreations made out of resin which are then textured and painted.
While we initially tested this early on in our pre-launch phase, ultimately we were unhappy with the overall quality FDM printing gave in regards to the replicas we wanted to produce. Regardless of the FDM printer used, layer lines are impossible to eliminate and it affects the quality of the final product. They are also significantly more lightweight and easy to break, which compromises the high standard we seek to provide.
We feel only resin can do justice to our artistic vision and provides a better, more realistic and durable rendition of these prehistoric creatures.
This means that no, we will not sell replica skulls and skeletons printed with our FDM printers. We only utilize our FDM printers for the articulated toy models (which are specially designed for them), and we only ever use our resin printers for the replicas.
The only potential exception to this would be custom, large-scale projects where the final piece is sizeable enough that the weight of resin may pose an issue.
When we sell our replicas, you will see them referenced by their scale size: the ratio representing the size of a model or object compared to its real-life counterpart. Be aware that scales sizes are estimates or approximates, and based off of current research data available for that prehistoric species.
At minimum, we strive to offer a "desktop display" size of up to 12 inches for each species, dependent upon what their real life size was. However, we can do any scale for any species! Certain larger scales may require an extended lead time to produce. Contact us for inquiries!
For our replicas, we utilize two 14k resolution resin printers:
Anycubic Photon Mono M7 Max
Anycubic Photon Mono M5s Pro
For our articulated toy models, we utilize two FDM printers:
Bambu Lab X1C
Bambu Lab H2C
For laser engraving and etching, we utilize one engraving machine:
xTool F2 Ultra UV
We are licensed commercial sellers for all of the collaborative artists we feature. Rest assured, NO AI is used in the creation of any of these artists' 3D models, as they are all sculpted by hand.
Skull and skeleton replicas feature the artistry of:
HasanOztrk
Insecthead
Nova Studios
Articulated toys feature the artistry of:
3DGOB
Flexi-Factory
For fossil, skull, and skeleton replicas:
High-quality, durable cured resins
Texture mediums
Hand-painted acrylic finishes
Pigment powders
Satin and matte varnishes
Wood bases (optional)
Brass/metal furnishings (optional)
Resin is a photopolymer liquid that cures under exposure to UV Light. This material does not soften with heat, but still should not be exposed to prolonged, direct sunlight as doing so will eventually affect the paint job.
For articulated toy models:
Biodegradable PLA
PLA is a plastic that is made from biodegradable and renewable resources, such as corn starch. This material can soften with heat, so do not leave in places that get excessively hot, in direct sunlight, or expose it to heat sources.
