SPECIMEN PROFILE

The tail of Stegosaurus was a powerful, muscular structure built for far more than balance. Its vertebrae supported a flexible tail that culminated in four elongated, sharply pointed thagomizers arranged in two pairs. These spikes were modified dermal structures anchored within the skin near the end of the tail, creating one of the most distinctive defensive adaptations in dinosaur anatomy.

The thagomizers could be raised and swung using the powerful musculature of the tail, providing Stegosaurus with an effective defensive weapon against predators. Their arrangement at the tail's tip allowed the animal to concentrate considerable force at a relatively small striking surface, while the preceding vertebrae provided the flexibility and structural support necessary for controlled movement.
