SPECIMEN PROFILE

Altirhinus kurzanovi was a medium-sized ornithopod herbivore that inhabited the floodplains and semi-arid environments of Early Cretaceous Mongolia. It belonged to a diverse group of plant-eating dinosaurs that flourished across Asia during a period of major diversification among ornithopods.

Its most distinctive feature was its unusually broad, arched snout, which gave the animal its name, meaning “high nose.” The enlarged nasal region may have supported specialized soft tissues or enhanced visual recognition among individuals. Altirhinus possessed a powerful beak and rows of grinding teeth adapted for processing vegetation, while its strong hindlimbs allowed efficient bipedal movement when needed. Its combination of feeding specialization and mobility made it a successful herbivore within the changing ecosystems of Early Cretaceous Asia.
