SPECIMEN PROFILE

Herrerasaurus ischigualastensis was a small, agile predatory dinosaur that inhabited the volcanic floodplains of Late Triassic Argentina. One of the earliest dinosaurs known from a relatively complete skeleton, it provides a remarkable glimpse into the early stages of dinosaur evolution, when these animals were still a minor component of terrestrial ecosystems.

Its lightweight body, long hindlimbs, and grasping forelimbs were adapted for active pursuit of small vertebrate prey. Unlike later theropods, Herrerasaurus retained several primitive skeletal features, including a partially flexible lower jaw and a mixture of ancestral and more advanced pelvic anatomy. Its combination of predatory specialization and early dinosaurian traits captures a pivotal moment when dinosaurs were beginning to establish themselves within Triassic ecosystems.
