SPECIMEN PROFILE

Parasaurolophus walkeri possessed one of the most distinctive skulls of any dinosaur, crowned by an elongated, hollow crest that extended far behind the head. The crest was connected to the nasal passages and formed a complex internal airway, creating a resonating structure that may have been used for vocal communication, visual signaling, or both.

The cervical vertebrae supported the massive head and its extended crest, forming the flexible connection between the skull and the rest of the neck. Their anatomy reflects the mechanical demands of carrying and maneuvering such an unusually specialized skull, giving the complete skull-and-neck assembly a clearer sense of how the animal's cranial architecture integrated with the rest of its body.
