Cryolophosaurus ellioti
Part of the RAPTORS & HUNTERS Exhibit
Early Jurassic Period, approx. 194-188 million years ago
1:2 Scale Skull Replica
SPECIMEN PROFILE
Cryolophosaurus ellioti was a large early theropod inhabiting the polar forests and volcanic floodplains of what is now Antarctica during the Early Jurassic. Despite its modern icy setting, Antarctica at the time was far warmer and supported dense vegetation, river systems, and seasonal ecosystems capable of sustaining large predatory dinosaurs.
Its most distinctive feature was the prominent transverse crest across the top of the skull, giving it one of the most recognizable cranial profiles among early theropods. Built with long hindlimbs and a lightly constructed frame, Cryolophosaurus was likely an agile pursuit predator adapted for hunting medium-sized herbivores within dynamic volcanic and forested environments.
COLLECTOR & CURATOR NOTE
An early Jurassic Antarctic predator distinguished by its dramatic cranial crest—capturing a pivotal stage in the evolution of large-bodied theropod hunters.
